Grove Unveils GMK5130-1 Crane

After announcing the launch of a new 130 t capacity GMK5130-1 (known as the
GMK5165 in the US and rated at 165 USt) all-terrain crane at bauma 2004, Grove
has now unveiled the first machines, delivered to customers at a Gala
Premiere event held at the Manitowoc Crane Group’s sales and service
facility in Langenfeld, Germany.
Two of the first new GMK5130-1s were on display; one in the colors of Dutch
crane rental company RIWAL (sister company Hovago), the first to be delivered
in Europe; and another headed to Australia. There was also a gathering of more
than 200 customers from across Europe at the event – all interested in the new
addition to the Grove all-terrain range. Attending were a group from Germany,
and customers from as far away as Spain, Portugal, Italy, France, the UK, CIS,
and Scandinavian countries.
Grove has already made a worldwide impact in the 5-axle all-terrain crane
market with the best-selling 100 t capacity GMK5100 (known as the GMK5120B in
the US and rated at 120 USt). This is in part due to Grove’s commitment to the
Taxi-Maxi ‘two cranes in one’ concept: the ‘Taxi’ crane with its ready-to-work
specification at 12t per axle, and the ‘Maxi’ with full counterweight and
ultimate performance.
The addition of the new 130 t capacity machine to the range, with some
significant additional features and benefits, will make the GMK5130-1 one of
the most versatile and best-performing cranes available in the over 100 t
class.
A new six-section 60 m (197 ft) MEGAFORM™/ TWIN-LOCK™ main boom is the major
feature of the GMK5130-1 specification (compared to the 51 m (167 ft)
five-section boom of the GMK5100). Along with this extra length of boom, the
GMK5130-1 also provides an exceptional lift capacity of 10 t (11 USt) with the
boom fully extended.
The hydraulic-luffing, swingaway jib is one of the highlights of the GMK
range. On the new GMK5130-1, an 11-18 m (36-59 ft) full-power luffing,
swingaway, plus inserts, makes possible jib lengths up to 32 m (105 ft). The
crane has a maximum possible tip height of 95 m (312 ft), and a maximum lift
capacity of 1.9 t (2.09 USt). A manual offset version of the swingaway is also
available.
The GMK5130-1 also provides no less than 13 different counterweight
combinations, up to 40.1 t (44 USt), allowing maximum versatility, and
especially useful for compliance with different international axle-weight
requirements.
In the European 12 t per-axle (and 10x8x10) ‘Taxi’ configuration, fully
equipped with 8.5 t (9.35 USt) counterweight, 16.00R25 tires, 11-18 m
swingaway jib and hook-block, the machine is ready to travel and operate,
completely independently.
In the ‘Maxi’ configuration, with up to 40.1 t of counterweight, optimum lift
capacities throughout the load chart are achieved for heavy-lift applications.
The GMK5130-1 also benefits from the newly styled crane cab, which is also
featured on other recently introduced models, including the GMK3055 and
GMK4075-1. Other features are the ECOS (electronic crane operating system) and
EKS5 (Light) load monitoring systems in a new console. The same ECOS
technology is now also used in the carrier cab to ergonomically centralize
controls and instrumentation.
The popular GMK5100 remains in production, but the new 130 t (143 USt),
five-axle model GMK5130-1, with its higher maximum lift capacity and longer
boom and jib combinations is intended to provide an even wider choice for
customers in the 100 t plus range.
Other GMKs on display
Other cranes from the GMK range were also on display at the Langenfeld Open
Day, notably the latest additions such as the 80 t rated GMK4075-1 (known as
the GMK4090-1 in the US and rated at 90 USt) and the 55t (60 USt) GMK3055.
They all now have the same distinctive new GMK crane cab and controls, with
the EKS5 (Light) and ECOS systems, as well as Grove’s MEGAFORM™ (U-shaped)
main boom, with TWIN-LOCK™ single-cylinder, telescopic, pinned-boom extension
system. They also all feature Grove’s unique MEGATRAK™ all-wheel-steer
independent suspension system.
Other attractions at the Open Day
The Langenfeld Open Day was themed similar to a German Christmas Market
(Weihnachtsmarkt), the traditional pre-Christmas festival held in towns
across Germany during December.
Features at the Open Day included:

Manitowoc Crane CARE. The comprehensive and coordinated global crane support
function for parts, service and technical information on all products from
Manitowoc Crane Group. It showed how the unrivalled world-wide network of
dealers is linked to provide what is regarded as the most comprehensive
facility of its sort in the industry.

Used Equipment. The division showed examples of fully-reconditioned used
cranes for sale, and an inside view of the extensive new repair and
refurbishment facilities at Langenfeld, where used cranes are rebuilt and
tested for re-sale in both the German and export markets.

CraneCREDIT. The financing division of the Manitowoc Crane Group, CraneCREDIT
explained how the company has a variety of financing services for customers.
Live demonstrations of the MEGATRAK™ suspension system were held, as well as a
routine showing the convenience of the hydraulic-luffing, swing-away jib
system available on all GMK cranes.
