Manitowoc’s Potain tower cranes are working to construct an international center in Moscow combining business, leisure and hospitality. It will be the largest development of its kind in Eastern Europe. The $12 billion Moscow International Business Center, known as Moscow City, will eventually cover one square kilometer (250 acres) and will consist of a series of towers linked together.

One company that has several Potain cranes on the project is Russian rental giant Rentakran. The company was founded in 1996 and has built a fleet of close to 200 tower cranes, the majority of which are Potains.

Serhan Arpaci, the commercial director of Rentakran, says that performance is crucial on such a high profile job.

“This is an ambitious project and one that will become a landmark in Moscow,” he says. “With so much attention on the site we need cranes that offer solid, reliable performance, which is what we get with Potain. We also get strong support from Manitowoc Crane Care.”

Rentakran has several cranes working for contractor ENKA on Moscow City. On the Eurasia Tower, one of the central towers under development for Mos City Group, one of the cranes it has supplied is a Potain MR 295 H20 luffing jib crane. The crane has a maximum capacity of 20 t (22 USt) and will climb to 202 m (662 ft) during construction of the 305 m (1,000 ft) tall structure. Building work on the Eurasia Tower will finish in March 2010.

There are two other Potain tower cranes from Rentakran working on another part of the project for contractor GSK Monolith. An 8 t (8.8 USt) capacity MC 175 and an 8 t (8.8 USt) capacity MDT 178 are both working on the Central Core. This section of the project covers three plots of land, connecting underground and overground levels of the development. Work on this part will finish in September 2009.

Another contractor on the project, Rasen, is using two Potain cranes from its own fleet, a 10 t (11 USt) MD 208 and an 8 t (8.8 USt) MD 175. These are working on the Mercury City Tower. These two cranes are handling preliminary low-level construction work on the job.

Later this year they will be dismantled and two MR 295 H16 luffing jib cranes will be erected to work on the construction of the tower. The H16 version of the MR 295 has a capacity of 16 t (17.6 USt). The Mercury City Tower will combine office, hotel and administration activities over its 70 stories. Upon completion the tower will offer 165,000 m2 (1.8 million ft2) of space.

The entire Moscow City project is scheduled for completion in 2020.

The cranes have a streamlined ergonomic cab giving an uncluttered view of the load and offering the driver room and comfort. Anti-slip steps and handholds provide easy access and color coded controls allow for quick identification and easy operation.
