Manitowoc launched the latest addition to its range of five-axle Grove all-terrain cranes, the GMK5110-1. Customers and dealers were the first to see the new crane at a special open day at the Manitowoc facility in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. It was introduced at a demonstration event on the company’s test pad as part of a series of product displays.

Maximum capacity for the new all-terrain crane is 110 t, and it has a five-section 50.6 m telescopic boom. Like other Grove cranes, the GMK5110-1 uses Manitowoc’s MEGAFORM boom design which affords it greater rigidity in the base section and saves weight without loss of capacity.

The GMK5110-1 has an 18 m swingaway jib for additional reach. Two 8 m boom extensions further boost reach to give a maximum tip height of 87 m. Maximum outreach is 46 m and the GMK5110-1’s impressive load chart means greater lifting capacities at all radii. The new crane replaces the GMK5100, a popular model and widely acknowledged as one of the best five-axle all-terrain cranes.

Frans Vanwinkel, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Manitowoc in EMEA, said that the GMK5110-1 has great potential.

“With the reputation of our GMK5100, there are high expectations for the new crane. The reaction from our customers has been overwhelmingly positive,” he said. “The GMK5110-1 will offer customers more reach, capacity and flexibility than the GMK5100, plus added functionality and more options.”

Owners of the new GMK5110-1 will enjoy the benefits of Manitowoc’s patented suspension system, MEGATRAK. A popular feature on Manitowoc cranes, MEGATRAK is an all-wheel steer system that ensures each wheel remains on the ground at all times. Doing this ensures stresses and weights do not continually need to be transferred between axles. Another beneficial feature on the new model is the ergonomic carrier cab which offers improved functionality, visibility and comfort.

All crane operations, including both superstructure and carrier functions are controlled via Manitowoc’s ECOS system. Working in tandem with the ECOS system, the GMK5110-1 is also fitted with the EKS 5 Light load monitoring system. EKS monitors the crane’s lifting operations at all times. It provides an early warning facility for faults or errors and can transmit data to any Manitowoc Crane Care center worldwide, allowing fast and accurate diagnosis and rapid repairs. The new crane fits between the 110 t GMK5095 and the 130 t GMK5130-2 in Grove’s product range.
