First Model 31000 Sold to Bulldog Erectors

Bulldog Erectors, Inc., of Newberry, S.C. is the first to buy Manitowoc’s new 2,535 USt capacity crawler crane, the Model 31000, Manitowoc announced at CONEXPO 2008 this week.

Manitowoc unveiled the new crane Tuesday at CONEXPO 2008 in Las Vegas. It is the largest Manitowoc has ever designed or built. The 31000 employs an innovative lift-enhancing mechanism which eliminates the need for a counterweight wagon. This new innovation, called the VPC (the Variable Position Counterweight) never touches the ground and extends or retracts as needed by the crane’s lift.

 Bob Shirey, president of Bulldog Erectors, said the decision to add Manitowoc’s new massive crane to his fleet was a natural step in his company’s growth. Bulldog Erectors began as a steel erector, but now leases cranes and lifting services to customers across North America.

 “The 31000 takes us to a part of the business we haven’t been before. We see a significant demand for heavy-lift projects, including, energy, petro-chemical, nuclear and major infrastructure work,” Shirey said. “We know the direction we want to go with our business, and we are going to go there with Manitowoc.”

 Bulldog Erectors’ fleet of cranes includes a half-dozen models of Manitowoc’s and many Grove model cranes.

 The Model 31000 crane was sold by Shawmut Equipment of Manchester, Conn.

Shawmut’s commitment to service after the sale has been a very important part of their decade-long relationship, Shirey said.

“Service is extremely important to us,” Shirey said. “If we have a crane down in the field, we can count on Shawmut to address the problem quickly and efficiently.”

 Bruce Buchan, vice president sales, Americas for Manitowoc, said the 31000 is a great fit for Bulldog Erectors and its growing crane-leasing business.

 “We commend Bulldog Erectors for having the vision to step up into the ultra heavy-lift sector of the industry. It’s obvious they understand customers are requiring bigger, more sophisticated cranes to meet future lifting needs,” Buchan said. “Manitowoc is excited to partner with Bulldog in bringing this new crane to the North American market.”

In addition to the new VPC, the Model 31000 offers these key features:

  • Four-trunnion mounted crawlers which allow the crane to oscillate during travel and provide even weight distribution during lifts;

  • Dual 600 hp Cummins engines which provides ample power for multifunction operation;

  • Swing assembly on a roller path system, rather than the typical turntable bearing. Which helps maximize load distribution and decrease ground bearing pressure.
