National keeps Bauman Crane on top of tree business

Bauman has been buying cranes for 41 years and currently has 14 in its fleet –
13 of which are National boom-trucks. The other crane is an older – yet still
reliable – 1973 Grove TMS300 truck mount.
Reliability
Starting out as a sign installation company
back in 1965, the Chalfont, Pennsylvania-based company soon found its greatest
need was for reliable lifting equipment. After purchasing a crane to handle
this need, it soon shifted the focus of its business to crane rental.
Frank Bauman, company president, recalls the company’s origins and the work it
does today. “The first National we bought was a 21t (23 USt) model 1295,” he
says. “We started out doing a variety of jobs with this machine, pretty much
what we do today – setting wooden roof trusses, lifting air-conditioning
units, installing parking lot lights. However our greatest area of growth now
involves tree work. While at first we were being called out once a week with
one crane, it is not uncommon to send up to seven cranes out for tree work
daily.”
Today the company employs a staff of 12 and operates from one location in
Chalfont. Although Bauman Crane is based in Bucks County, its job locations
often include the five neighboring counties.
David Kemmerer has been the owner of Bauman Crane for the past five years. He
works closely with Frank Bauman, whose key role as company president enables
the firm to profit from his knowledge of local industry. Kemmerer explains how
the company benefits from tailoring its fleet to the local market.
“We are able to optimize the services we offer, because our National machines
are so versatile. They offer compact dimensions, and have exceptional reach,”
he says. “We get much of our work because of our 1500 series cranes – it is
our number one model because of its performance. We have seven 1500 series
machines, and we find they are second to none on jobsites where space is at a
premium. They are well-suited to working in the city because they have
practically no tail swing and an excellent boom length.”
National’s 1500 cranes are available with four or five section booms, and
offer a maximum capacity of 33 t (36 USt).
“All of our Nationals hold up well, it’s amazing how little wear they show,
despite their frequency of use,” says Kemmerer. “We use Manitowoc Crane CARE
services mainly for parts support but because their service manuals are so
complete we only call for assistance as a last resort.”
Steady growth
The current market, as far as Bauman Crane
is concerned, is fantastic, and continued growth is anticipated. The company
has grown steadily over the past 41 years because it has always put its
customers first.
“Our philosophy has always been to let the market push us, and there is always
demand for cranes of all capacities,” says Kemmerer. “We are considering
purchasing a Grove. Like National, Grove is a company that offers great
products and stands behind its name. Brand loyalty is a personal preference,
but we actively assess the market to suit our customer’s needs. The fact MCG
products come out on top every time, just shows us we were right all along.”
