Opening of new factory in China attracts over 700

Over 700 guests attended one of the biggest events for the lifting industry this year, the opening of Manitowoc Crane Group’s new manufacturing facility in Zhangjiagang, China. The new facility covers 56,356 m2 (13.9 acres) and produces a range of Potain tower cranes as well as components for other Manitowoc Crane Group cranes.

Addressing guests at the official opening, Terry Growcock, chairman and CEO of The Manitowoc Company, said.

“The opening of this facility is an exciting new chapter in Manitowoc’s proud history of growth and achievement over the past 104 years,” he said. “China continues to be an important component of our business development strategy. Now with a modern new development and a skilled team of employees, I’m looking forward to seeing the facility at full capacity to meet the demand in China and around the globe. I have confidence that this will turn out to be one of the best manufacturing facilities in the world.”

The event also saw speeches from Glen Tellock, president and general manager of Manitowoc Crane Group, and Eric Etchart, executive vice president of Manitowoc Crane Group in Asia-Pacific, as well as from local government representatives. The opening ceremony featured a traditional Chinese lion dance followed by a ceremonial ribbon cutting undertaken by a variety of senior MCG staff and local government officials.

Eric Etchart, executive vice president for Manitowoc Crane Group in Asia-Pacific, said of the event.

“The quality and number of visitors we attracted to this opening demonstrates just how important this facility is going to be to the market,” he said. The team here deserves great praise for the work they have done. It is an amazing achievement.”

The new facility handles deliveries from between 20 to 25 container trucks per day. Its steel pre-treatment and cutting line can process 10 t (11 USt) per hour or 38,000 t (41,900 USt) per year. It has a steel warehouse which is home to over 200 types of steel and which can store up to 12,000 t (13,200 USt) at any one time. The factory is adjacent to the new Zhangjiagang – Shanghai expressway.
