Manitowoc’s Model 16000 crawler crane made its European debut at Intermat 2006 following a successful introduction in Americas and Asia last year. The Model 16000 combines heavy lifting with long reach and boasts a maximum lift capacity of 400 t (440 USt) and a maximum heavy-lift main boom reach of 96 m (315 ft). The 16000’s maximum combination of main boom and luffing jib is 132 m (432 ft), using an optional luffing jib of 84 m (276 ft). One of the crane’s most popular features is an optional 95 t (105 USt), pin-on upper boom point, designed specifically for applications such as wind turbine erection. Manitowoc’s capacity-enhancing MAX-ER attachment is also available for the 16000, offering even greater lifting capacity in the tipping region of the chart. With the MAX-ER attachment, the Model 16000’s reach increases to 120 m (394 ft) of main boom or 84 m (276 ft) of main boom with an additional 84 m (276 ft) of luffing jib. Drum performance is impressive with a line pull of 15.8 t (35,000 lb) and hoist speeds of up to 212 m/minute (697 ft/minute) available on the main drum. Two optional auxiliary drums offer line pulls of 15.8 t (35,000 lb) and 13.6 t (30,000 lb), respectively, and corresponding line speeds of 173 m/minute (570 ft/minute) and 127 m/minute (417 ft/minute). The Model 16000’s hydraulic system features six high-pressure piston pumps that provide power flow to the hoisting drums, the boom hoist, and the swing, as well as to both left and right crawlers. The two identical wide-cast steel crawler tracks measure 10.4 m (34 ft) long by 1.5 m (5 ft) wide, and are powered independently of each other by variable hydraulic displacement motors. The crane’s engine is a Cummins Model QSX15, which is capable of generating 372 kW (500 hp) at 1800 rpm. To ensure safety and operator comfort, Manitowoc’s 16000 offers as standard EPIC controls, with CAN-BUS technology, and an ergonomically-sound Vision cab.
