The MCT 88, the first topless model from Potain’s MC range of city cranes, was on display at bauma 2007. The company also announced a second model in the range, the MCT 78, to debut later this year. MC cranes are small, quick to erect, easy to transport, and take up very little space on site. The MCT range adds a topless capability to those benefits, reducing crane height and allowing more to be used in a smaller space. In addition, the MCT range includes frequency converter-controlled mechanisms and an integrated remote control.

Francois Czerwinski, product manager for Potain’s top-slewing tower cranes, says the popularity of topless cranes is on the rise.

“Demand for topless technology and frequency converter technologies is growing and the Potain range is characterized by its simplicity of design and operation,” he says. “These MCT cranes are tailor-made for built-up urban environments. They are precise, easy to operate and offer excellent lifting capabilities with minimal erection and transportation costs.”

The MCT 88 launched late last year and features Potain’s distinctive aerodynamic counter-jib design. The counter jib employs Potain’s rear-tail wind sail plates, which fold down for easier transportation.

Maximum capacity of the MCT 88 is 5 t, while its maximum jib length is 52 m at which distance it can lift 1.1 t. An integrated remote control with indicators is standard. Options include Potain’s Vision cab, anemometer, and area limiting controls. The MCT 78, which will launch later in 2007, will be the second model in the MCT line. This crane offers a maximum capacity of 3.6 t and a maximum jib length of 51 m. It can lift 1.05 t at its jib end. A range of LVF Optima hoist winches provide hoist speeds of up to 82 m/min.

Because of their topless design, setup is easier and quicker since there is no tie bar to install. Set up is further simplified by quick connections between jib sections, and plugs between all electrical and safety connections. The cranes’ innovative design also enables rope-reeving on the ground, minimizing the rigging work at erected height.
